City Lights Research Project
During the 2010-2011 school year, Team USA took on the task of helping the City of St. Albans take an inventory of the public street lights. The background work included mapping the city lights by walking and locating all street lights. Students used detailed maps and GPS units to get accurate locations. This data was uploaded onto a Google Earth file and shared. Students also researched the pros and cons of street lights, discussed cost of running the lights, conducted polls about street lights, and created alternatives to our City's current lighting scenario.
At the council meeting, Team USA presented the Google Earth map, research on street lights and shared possible solutions to reducing the cost of street lights. The Council and general audience appreciated the effort and time put into this project. Over the years since their presentation, the City has installed many energy efficient LED street lights, rather than maintaining the traditional high-energy use street lights.
