Stewardship Day 2018

If you passed by St. Albans City School on June 6th around 10:00 am, you would have seen the entire school posing on the front steps in our matching Stewardship Softball Shirts. The first Wednesday of June is Stewardship Day, an annual tradition at St. Albans City School.
The day begins with everyone getting to school in a healthy and green way. For students, it was a typical walking/biking Wednesday, which hundreds have participated in all year long . For staff, creativity was needed because parking in the school lot was not an option. Offsite parking was offered at several areas ranging from two blocks to just under two miles away. Parking at the closest location, the City Public Works Garage was limited to 20, and required a parking pass. Many chose Holy Angels Church, which offered a morning walk of just under one mile. We are thankful for our community supporters and neighbors that make a day like this possible.
Once everyone had arrived, our student designed Stewardship T-shirts were given out and put on. Students were offered a balanced breakfast, and the day was underway. The main event is always the school wide morning assembly. The Stewardship Committee student leaders plan for, organize, and run the entire assembly. They introduce speakers, provide brain breaks and help manage a nearly 1000 person audience. This year, the three kindergarten students who started the students presentations said it all with their words and their poise. “Our bodies may be little, but our brains think big.” If you had closed your eyes, you would have thought you were listening to skilled public speakers.
The assembly ended with our song, a student written version of This Land is Your Land, that highlights our many Stewardship Projects. When the audience heard that they were about to sing, the excitement was evident and students jumped to their feet and their voices filled the gym. It has taken three years for this tradition to become a well established part of our Stewardship Day. Each year the Stewardship Committee updates the song to reflect the changes that are made in stewardship projects.
From the assembly it is off to the front steps for our whole school picture. The events wrapped up with a locavore lunch, maple frozen yogurt, hands-on student presentations throughout the school, work in the gardens and team activities. This is our 5th year celebrating Stewardship Day and we look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.
