St. Albans City School offers a biking unit every spring through the physical education program for students in grades fourth through sixth. This wonderful opportunity is available through Local Motion VT and their Bike Smart program. Our physical education teachers impart fundamental bike riding skills with Local Motion bikes and teach rules that students absorb and use. Most exciting is the fact that every year there are empowered and excited about a new way to exercise and travel. The bikes in the Bike Smart trailer allows our school to put on an annual 6th grade bike trip on the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail. All 6th graders bike 12 miles to the Abbey picnic fields where they have a cookout and play outdoor games.
St. Albans City School is very excited to introduce a tricycle unit this year to our youngest of students. The unit focused on our Bright Beginnings Community that consists of preschoolers and kindergartners. We were able to offer this opportunity through our Early Childhood and Adapted physical education programs. This unit proved to be an amazing experience for all. It focused on socialization and communication skills by taking turns and sharing, it increased the students gross motor skills and coordination and developed a love of biking within our youngest students. This love aligns with St. Albans City School’s philosophy of caring and respecting our environment and planet. We are so excited to continue this program in the future and look forward to offering it in the fall as well as in the spring.
