The Science of Poetry
By Tess Bashaw
Teacher at St. Albans City School
Science and poetry? Together? Definitely!
Groups of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at St. Albans City School have been experimenting with integrating scientific knowledge and the power of poetry. With the help of Lizzy Fox, a local poet and educator who spent two days leading small group workshops, students wove poems out of scientific concepts. Students created their first poems as a group and then went on to work on individual pieces. Students got to reflect on the beauty of science and look at what they have learned in a whole new way. The teachers and students here at City School are grateful to Lizzy Fox for helping us to gain a new perspective on what we are learning. Below are the pantoums, a form of Malaysian poetry, that each team wrote.
