ST. ALBANS — Are you fit enough to race through a 12-year-old’s imagination? Does the thought of going over, under, around and through obstacles — while being timed — get you excited?
If so, we had an event for you!
On December 20, the St. Albans City School gym was transformed into a giant obstacle course designed by fifth and sixth grade students. The students had the opportunity to show off their speed, agility and teamwork skills by running the course in teams of four. Twenty-five teams competed against each other, trying to achieve the fastest time on the course.
This assembly was a chance for students to be challenged by choice, having the opportunity to show others their personal best, not only physically, but in their attitude and effort. The assembly was an engaging and energizing experience for the competitors and audience heading into vacation.
The audience was made up of students and staff from grades one through six. The energy and noise level in the gym was taken to a whole new level as evidenced in their engagement throughout the hour-long assembly.
Mr. Mehaffey’s band students played the drums while competitors ran the course. Ms. Cameron-Musente offered music during intermission that the students sang and danced to, such as the ever-engaging YMCA!
The wave made several appearances in the stands. A highlight of the assembly was when the final team stepped up to compete on the course. The gym erupted with excitement and enthusiasm as Mr. Clark, Mr. Cook, Ms. Chisholm and Miss Macy walked onto the course. They did a great job and proved that one is never too old to get involved and have a little fun.
The obstacle course assembly was a great way to bring staff and students together for a little friendly competition, loud cheering and fun as the year came to a close. --Meg Jarvis is a physical education teacher at St. Albans City School.
