ST. ALBANS — A group of witches and gnomes have taken center stage here at St. Albans City School this summer! For the last two weeks there have been 11 students under the watchful direction of BFA-St. Albans alumna and Bennington College student extraordinaire, Holly Sherrer. Sherrer is working along with Marina Nadeau and Kristen Lapointe to bring together this year’s Summer Theater Production: Holka Polka, a one act fairy tale mystery! The students were cast in their roles on their very first day of camp and have been running lines and rehearsing ever since.
This play has a little bit of everything: a good witch, evil sisters, a wolf, wizards, gnomes, a prince and of course — a fairy godmother. The students have stepped into their roles and embraced the story of a young good witch who has been given the daunting task of saving fairy tale land. There are moments of laughter, some with tears, a little bit of fighting, and lots of magic that are all packed into this charming one-act play. The students are working toward the performance that will end the two week theater camp.
The students have also been responsible for writing their own biographies for the program, designing and painting sets, as well as some of the costume ideas and design. Their days are broken up with fun theater games, swimming, and team building activities, as well as a quick break for lunch! Their hard work is easy to see, as they have learned the entire play and prepared for the performance in just eight short days. This camp has provided an opportunity for the students to practice their theater skills, build some relationships, and challenge themselves within a safe and respectful environment. The students and directors alike have a lot to be proud of with this years’ summer show.
--Alisha Sawyer is the St. Albans City School director of school enrichment.
