ST. ALBANS CITY — On Friday, Jan. 19, students from the 1st-3rd grade Learning Community, Team Imagination headed outside for 45 minutes of snowshoe fun. Last year, with the help of grant funding, St. Albans City School was able purchase 60 pairs of snowshoes for use on school property and on field trips.
Earlier in the school day Imagination students got to see sample snowshoes in the classroom so they could familiarize themselves with the ratcheting binding systems. And, just prior to snowshoe time, Mrs. Smith went outside to lay out snowshoes for all the youngest students and to make sure the bindings were latched appropriately. Even with this kind of planning there was the inevitable need to assist dozens of children with putting on the snowshoes effectively. Once that mission was accomplished, the kids were off for a romp in the snow.
Many of the kids walked and ran the exterior of our extensive athletic fields. There were impromptu sprinting races, chases, and the general fun kids this age have when given a chance to play in the snow. Best of all, there were plenty of smiles, which is exactly what was hoped for from our students. We are grateful to have access to these snowshoes because they allow us one more way to appreciate Vermont winters and enjoy being connected with our School.
For St. Albans community members who are unfamiliar with St. Albans City School practices, we celebrate Fun Fridays, wherein each Learning Community finds activities and time on Fridays to make being at school a social and satisfying experience. The purpose is to increase the likelihood that children will enjoy being in school and that they will strive to be here on that last day of the school week. Our statistics show that Fun Friday’s have helpedmaximize our attendance and we believe they have helped boost our students social and creative skills.
The brave and patient teachers who facilitated the event for these very young snowshoe enthusiasts were Mrs. Dionne and Mrs. Smith.
