Once a Raider, Always a Raider
ByWendyTrainer
St. Albans City School
As Alek walked back into the empty school gym, he could almost hear the sounds of the basketballs and players that he once watched and cheered for. “Back to where it all began” he says with a laugh.” I definitely feel like I am home.” Alek Wolfe, now a senior at Bellows Free Academy, was once a student at St. Albans City School. During his eighth grade year, Alek would join the Boys Basketball Team as manager, and thus start down a path towards a new interest.
Alek has always had an interest in radio personalities and broadcasting. As a young child he would narrate wrestling matches in a voice recorder that he carries on himself at all times. He would relive the highlights and outcomes by giving life to the characters and storylines. He would then download his recordings into his computer categorize them and then make a play mix.
Once Alek joined the Boys Raiders Basketball Team, he started to record events at practices and his conversations with Coach Scott Martin and the other team mates. During the first home game for his team, Alek sat at the score table and commentated his first game. That was the beginning of his future in professional commentating.
Since his days at City School, Alek has gone on to commentate at BFA for basketball and hockey. He has a live show every week on Periscope called the Mix Down. He has worked at local radio stations learning about broadcasting and operations. He has met broadcasters for the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Boston Red Sox. Alek is looking forward to attending Lyndon State College in the fall, where he will study broadcasting.
So on Monday, May 14, 2018, Alek joined by Coach Martin and former Athletic Director, Wendy Trainer, did a live broadcast from the gym at City School “just like the old days” Alek says. Things have changed, however, Alek now records with some pretty impressive equipment and knows more about sports and programming. He has matured and grown into a focused young man. Not letting his blindness stop him from anything he has wanted to pursue, Alek has been an inspiration to us all. As he leaves the gym, Alek says “Once a Raider, Always a Raider”.
