Making Maple Syrup with HOPE
Making syrup is a wonderful HANDS-ON experience for students. The maple sugaring season in Vermont is usually compact, and all the HOPE students become deeply engaged in the sugaring process from beginning to end. They typically find that it is a joyful experience to be outside using their hands, bodies and minds. The end product is delicious maple syrup and something that they enjoy making and sharing with the school community. HOPE students shine by showing what they have learned about sugaring with the rest of the school.
Construction and Use of a Sap Collecting Sled
In 2018 HOPE students built a sap collection sled that could be used with wheels or sled runners. It was a good wood shop project a practical purpose. Students are given the independence to head into the woods and collect sap on their own. They enjoy the responsibility and the freedom of completing the task.
